Autism has become one of the top disabilities in California’s developmental system. Today, the rise of autism is increasing by 10 - 17 percent each year. (Madeleine 3) "The disease was first identified by child psychologist Leo Kanner in 1943 at Johns Hopkins University" (Little 2). Autism is a disorder that is usually detected within the first three years. According to the Autism Society of America, 1 in 166 individuals are diagnosed with autism, making it more common than the pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. Boys are four times more likely to have it than girls. People with autism have a hard time communicating verbally and physically. They have special ways of gathering and reacting to information presented to them.

Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorder has become the most common neurological and developmental disorder diagnosed in children today. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2012) estimate that 1 out of every 88 American children have been properly diagnosed. There is no known cure for autism, and the inconsistencies of the symptoms of autism in each case make it difficult to target a particular set of effective treatments. However some behavior management therapies, specifically physical therapy, may help to significantly control the unwanted symptoms in young children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is a very complex, neurobehavioral disorder that includes impairments in social interaction and communication and development skills. It usually occurs during the first three years of life. The disorder has a large range of symptoms and levels of impairment. It can severely change the way someone lives. People with autism show little interest in other people and lack social awareness. On its own, autism is not a learning disability or a mental health problem.

The topic I chose to research for the final project of this quarter is Autism, this paper is geared towards early childhood educators, children and families who are coping with ASD. I have included resources for children and their families, and also included strategies and ideas in working with young children with ASD in the classroom. In the past, there were few treatments that promised improvement in the symptoms of autism, and therefore parents viewed a diagnosis of autism as a sentence of doom. Recently, however, an alternative approach called Functional Medicine has made great strides in identifying the biochemical causes of an individual child's autism and in delivering significant improvement.

Parents of two children are searching for treatments to help their autistic children who can 't communicate their feels or needs. They have tried many therapies conventional or unconventional and all they want is to treat their children to live an independent life. Autism is a mysterious disorder for the great doctors who have found cure for many other mysterious diseases. Researchers don 't know the cause each child to behave differently from others with the same disorder or how to treat the best that doesn’t more problems to the children with the disorder.

However, there are many other symptoms that can be exhibited based on severity. Severity is based on the needs of the individual, but the majority of Autistic traits will be present early on in development (DSM-5, 2013, p.50). Recently, there has been a rise in the number of people diagnosed with ASD and researchers speculate this is because of new technology and environmental factors (What is Autism?, 2015). The new technology that has been developed, has allowed for more research to be dedicated to the causes of Autism. A major finding is that gene mutations have been determined to account for at least 15% of ASD cases (DSM-5, 2013, p. 57). The environmental factors that can impact development and may result in Autism are: parental age at conception, illness during pregnancy, and oxygen deprivation of the fetus (What is Autism?, 2015). Once, an individual is suspected to have Autism, they must be evaluated and diagnosed officially by a psychiatrist or specialist for the best treatment procedures. Unfortunately, there is a limited number of medicines specific for ASD, but Risperidone and Aripiprazole have shown to improve mood and irritability in Autistic children (Medicines, 2015). However, the best treatment outcomes usually are a combination of medication and behavioral therapy (How is Autism Treated?, 2015). Within the public school system, schools are required by law to provide appropriate education to suit the needs of the child. Whether these accommodations are by pull-out, extra classes, or extra attention is based on the resources of the district, but every disabled child is entitled to help (Hallahan et. al, 2015). According to Hyman and Levy (2011), many families use complementary and alternative medical treatments to lessen the symptoms of autism (CAM). Some use biologic treatments which includes taking vitamins and herbs. The problem with taking vitamins and herbs is that it is not regulated for quality as medications are. There are unknown active ingredients that make it hard to determine if the intervention is working with the allotted dosage. To determine the effectiveness of CAM, researchers need to have placebo control conditions so that it does not affect the results and prevent bias.

     There are several reasons why I chose the topic of Autism. First, autism is intriguing

It’s a popular belief that autism is a biological development disorder in the brain. Meaning that the brain misfires and doesn’t develop the same way as most brains do. Which is supposedly cause by genetic mutations which evidently happen during development. It is possible that these genetic mutations come from early exposure to mercury. Which is in shots some children receive at very young ages.

Being a kid with autism isn’t easy, trust me. Personally, being autistic doesn’t make you weird and an outcast, it makes you special and unique. In this report, you will learn a lot about autism. You’ll learn about the background and history of autism. You’ll also learn about its research, experiments and their outcomes. Get prepared, to autism and away!!!

Autism, it is not a disease and not something contagious, but to me autism is disability that needs to be noticed. It is something that affects millions of people. By knowing the signs and facts about autism it can help the people that have not been diagnosed. If we can get all autistics diagnosed that would change education and health care.

I have decided to do a presentation on the diagnoses and prognoses of a broad disorder. This is Autism Spectrum Disorder and the many levels that are alone in this disorder. The basics of which range from those that are non-verbal, low social and progress up to the high intelligence and low social variant. Classic autism is what most people see as the only form and those visual clues include: nonverbal communication, increased focus and concentration of the individual on a particular object, repetitive movements, such as hand flapping or rocking, even self-harm is an identifying characteristic of classic autism.
