It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.

From elementary school to high school, I was taught that my writing had to be structured and follow strict criteria. After I arrived in Mr. Mukherjee’s ENG 102 class, I was given the opportunity to express my creative freedom through words and graphical pictures. It can often be difficult and challenging to improve upon my own writing abilities unless motived with an idea in mind. When looking back on my time at ASU, I thought about the goals that I wanted to address for myself and the course goals that my instructor had set for the class. These goals include ones that I had accomplished to the best of my ability and ones that I need to address as well as improve.

Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.

As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. In order to assess Kamil’s writing skills, I collected and analyzed a few writing pieces of various types of writing. Kamil’s style of writing and the tone differ depending on the type of composition, which means that he is aware of the purpose and the potential audience when he writes. The graphic aspect of writing indicates that Kamil has knowledge about forming the 26 letters of the English alphabet. His writing is also legible and clear most of the time. Some pieces of Kamil’s writing, such as “Feature Article”, “Oil Spilling”, “Minecraft”, and “How I came to America” include a thoughtful and interesting introduction as well as an effective and creative conclusion. In these compositions, Kamil groups and organizes facts logically, he links the ideas together, using transition words, e.g. “After ten hours of doing stuff we finally got to America! Thereafter we went througth the securite machines…” Also, a variety of sentences is applied in these pieces. On the other hand, a persuasive letter and an opinion piece, “What would you rather do: find your way through a corn maze or tour a haunted house?” include a few confusing sentences and thoughts. The introduction and closing are not precise, as they do not clearly state Kamil’s personal opinion. For example, in a persuasive letter to the principal of his school, Kamil states a few good reasons why his school should not have air conditioning, he supports his arguments with some pieces of evidence, and then, in closing

In chapter nineteen of his book “On Writing Well,” William Zinsser explains the purpose of writing humor as well as some ways to write humor. He argues that humor is the best tool for nonfiction writers to make an important point. Many writers seldom use humor in their writing; as a result, humor captures the audience’s attention. He continues to explain how humor writers often criticize society through unique perspectives. Therefore, when the audience laugh at how ridiculous humorous writing is, they realize that the author is really ridiculing society.

As a writer there are many elements of writing that I struggle with, especially when composing an essay. When writing an essay, there are usually many skills that need to be used in order to be successful with the writing assignment. Many times in writing I struggle with explaining and fully developing the supporting details and ideas in my essay. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences, connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. Lastly, improvement can be made in my writing by avoiding awkward or wordy sentences. Writers face numerous challenges in their writing but strive to overcome or improve these challenges with each piece they write.

In writing it’s important to have an understanding of what you’re trying to convey for your audience in addition to how you you will present your ideas. Effective communication extends beyond having well organized writing expressed in complete and coherent sentences. The style, tone and clarity of writing must also be considered, as they are constantly changing relative to the audience. Again, analyzing one’s audience and purpose is essential to successful writing. Appropriately, when choosing the most effective language, it is important to consider the document objective as well as the reader.
