This paper is the first part of a training manual that will help employees to have a better understanding of diversity in the work place and how to act towards different diversity issues that may arise in the workplace. It will also give current statistics and recent trends of the demographics in the United States as well as the forecasted trends. Also included will be a rough outline of the entire contents of the manual and the table of contents for the manual.

In the nursing profession in order for there to be quality care there needs to be an understanding of multiple cultures. Cultural diversity is the “plurality of ideas and opinions for behavior to which people are exposed, adding to the texture and complicity of a society.” (Craven, Hirnle, & Jensen, n.d., p. 1396) Cultural acceptance and knowledge of diverity does not just begin in the place of employment, it is also important in the education of nursing as well. Diverse teaching and a diverse set of nursing students is what is needed in order for cultural diversity to be understood and for quality care to be met in the up and coming nurses. In nursing education there needs to be diverse nursing students, increased effectiveness in education with diverse nursing students, and in hospitals an increase in racial and ethical diversity.
The past decade, diversity in the workplace has become one of the most frequently discussed topics in management groups or circles, while interested academically in the actual prospective of workplace diversity has remained limited. To be successful in managing diversity in the workplace first one must understand it from a personal perspective. To be able to derive knowledge and strength from one’s differences shows deep faces in character. A book I read in high school defined diversity as “the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, values, and beliefs as assets to the groups and organizations with which they interact” (Rasmussen, 1996, p. 274). Workplace diversity is characterized as representing two perspectives: functionalist perspectives and a critical believe there is several challenges with diversity in the workforce. Challenge because it requires organizational change; it means fostering a cultural environment that values differences and maximizes the potential of all employees. Workplace diversity is everywhere, from the small corner business to the fortune 500 company, and is one of the most important challenges facing companies today. This mixture of diverse gender, personality, experience, race, and culture is what makes a team successful. It is an opportunity because organizations that proactively address diversity have a competitive advantage. An advantage everyone wants.
Diversity is what makes people different, not just culturally but in human differences. Having a multitude of differences in the workforce gives an organization the ability to use many ideas to reach a common goal. A person could say that a diverse group of people together in one room can accomplish greater achievements than a room filled with the same types of individuals. Demographics in America have been reshaped in the past century. With an expansive immigration rate, the United States has grown to be a diverse country. The United States is quickly moving from being a nation that has a White Majority and minority groups of different races and ethnicities to one in which no single racial or ethnic group will be in the majority (Wilson, Gutierrez, Chao 2013). Although many minority groups are continuing to migrate on to U.S territory, some have surpassed others making them the more dominant minority in America. Latinos have surpassed African America as the largest minority, and the portion of the country that is white has fallen from roughly ninety percent to sixty percent (Hajnal, Rivera 2014).
Diversity is embedded in America’s DNA; this is best illustrated by the core message of our constitution. Though the founding fathers’ application of said document was woefully inadequate in terms of inclusion, and the United States has not always lived up to those grand ideas, we have steadily grown better at creating and inhabiting a more just and all-embracing society. Despite setbacks there is hope and progress. As diversity is the key issue of our, or any, time; we must continue seeking, promoting, and ensuring it progression. This is, in short, an imperative and enduring process.
