A velocity selector is a device that uses both an electric and magnetic field to allow only particles moving at a specific speed through it. Parti- cles that move too fast will be forced to hit one wall of the selector while particles that move too slow will hit the other. Particles moving at the correct speed will travel through with a constant velocity. A particular velocity selector has a magnetic field B= 40μT pointing in the z direction (out of the page), and an electric field E= 1.2 N/C pointing in the x direction (to the right of the page).
