A worker in a large welding and steel fabrication shop asked his employer if he could make a trailer hitch for his pickup truck after hours if he paid the shop for the material used. His employer gave him permission. That evening, the worker searched among the many racks of various kinds of steel bars for the one suitable for his job. He selected a 1/2 by 2 inch HR bar and sawed off the pieces he needed. He drilled holes, heated areas red hot to bend them, then quenched them in water. He welded the parts together and assembled the hitch on his truck. When he got home and he lifted the tongue of his trailer over the hitch and dropped it in place, to his great surprise, the hitch broke off and fell to the ground. What had he done wrong?
