The pH of a basic buffer is varied by adding small amount of acid to it Similarly, if the buffer is acidic, the pH is varied by adding small amount of base to it. So, in order to stop the moderate changes in pH, that is to nullify the effect of added base or acid, the buffering action will takes place until the solution get completely neutralised.
