Question

Explain how many types of reductions, differing in how H2 is added ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The addition of hydrogen to alkynes or alkene leads to the reduction of the compound and reaction is known as Hydrogenation reaction.

Step 2

There are 2 ways by which H2 reacts with alkyne and adds either as syn addition or by anti-addition.

Complete reduction:

  • Alkyne reaction with H2 in the presence of metal then alkene is formed and there will be n syn or anti addition

Partial reduction:

  • Alkyne reaction with H2 in presence of Lindlar catalyst, there is syn addition product formed because of cis addition of Hydrogen atom across double bonds.
  • Alkyne reaction with Na/NH3, there is anti-addition of hydrogen atoms across double bonds.
