Experiment 2. Diffusion: Diffusion of molecules down their concentration gradient can be
demonstrated using dialysis tubing for a membrane. Dialysis tubing has pores of somewhat uniform size
and is selectively permeable based on the size of the molecule. The permeability of the dialysis
membrane will be tested using three different sized molecules: glucose (a monosaccharide), starch (a
polysaccharide), and iodine (I2KI). These three molecules were chosen not only because they are highly
variable in molecular weight, but also because their location can readily be determined using the
Benedict's and iodine tests for reducing sugar and starch, respectively. Benedict's reagent reacts with
reducing sugars (such as glucose) and, if heated, the color changes from the bright, royal blue of the
reagent to cloudy green, yellow, orange, or reddish brown (depending on the concentration of sugar). If
