Question

How will you test for the gas which is liberated when hydrochloric acid reacts with an active metal?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Metals react with acids to give H2 gas.

Active metals are the metals that reacts strongly with other substances. Alkali metals are the examples of active metals.

Here, active metal reacts with HCl to give H2 gas and Metal chloride.

By passing the gas obtained from the reaction of active metal with hydrochloric acid into a soap solution produces H2 bubbles. When a lit candle is kept into the bubble it burst out giving a pop sound and the light exhausts. The pop sound indicates that the gas present is H2 gas.
