Question

Introduce the compressibility factor, which accounts for the deviation of real gases from ideal-gas behavior.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Gas laws give the relation between pressure, temperature, and volume.

Step 2

PV=nRT is the gas equation. The gas which follows this equation and the gas laws at every temperature and pressure value is termed as an ideal gas. The deviation from this occurs at a high temperature and pressure range.

Such deviation from ideal behavior is given by the compressibility factor represented as Z. This factor is introduced into the gas equation as:

Z=PVnRT

For an ideal gas, the value of Z=1 since ideal gas obeys gas equation and gas laws, but or real gas it is not equal to 1 as for this:

Z<1 or >1
