Fatty acids are usually degraded by the beta-oxidation pathway but in some cases, such as in branched fatty acid phytanic acid, the presence of a branch at carbon-3 prevents the degradation by beta-oxidation. Therefore, degradation of phytanic acid takes place by the alpha-oxidation pathway.
