Question

Predict the products of halogenations, oxidations, reductions, and cleavages of alkenes, including the orientation (regiochemistry) and the stereochemistry of the reaction.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The compounds which is composed of only carbon and hydrogen are known as hydrocarbons.

Hydrocarbons is are classified into saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Unsaturated compounds having double bond are known as alkenes.

Step 2

Alkenes undergoes addition reaction due to the presence of electron rich site at the carbon atom.

Alkenes reacts with hydrohalic acid to form alkyl halide. The reaction of alkenes with halogenation is a type of oxidation reaction which produces di halogenated compound.

The oxidation of alkenes in the presence of strong oxidizing agent like peroxy acid given dehydroxylated product. This is a type of an oxidation reaction.

The reduction of alkenes gives alkanes. On the other hand, the oxidative cleavage of alkenes produces ketones or aldehydes depending on the type of alkene present.
