Recall that the 4s orbital fills before the 3d orbitals for the elements in the first row of the d block (Sc to Zn). Following the pattern for writing electron configurations for main group ions, then, we might expect the two electrons lost in the formation of the Fe2+ ion to come from the 3d subshell. however this is not the case. Detail how atoms from the d block actually lose their electrons.

Question

Recall that the 4s orbital fills before the 3d orbitals for the elements in the first row of the d block (Sc to Zn). Following the pattern for writing electron configurations for main group ions, then, we might expect the two electrons lost in the formation of the Fe2+ ion to come from the 3d subshell. however this is not the case. Expert Solution
Step 1

First row d - block elements have general electronic configuration [ Ar ] 4 s 2 3 d , where x may have values 1 to 10.

In First row  d - block elements , 4 s sub shell is outer most shell. The 3 d sub shell is not valence sub shell. Therefore, whenever First row  d - block elements want to loss electrons, electrons from 4 s sub shell are lost first and then electron from 3 d sub shell lost.

E.C of Fe is [ Ar ] 4 s 2 , 3 d 6
