In an electrochemical cell, there are two half cells namely, reduction half-cell and oxidation half-cell. If a species loses one or more electrons, then it is an oxidation reaction. If a species gains an electron or more, then it is a reduction reaction. In electrochemical cell, oxidation takes place at anode whereas reduction takes place at cathode.
