What is the main idea in the valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory?
Interpretation:
The main idea in the valence shell electron pair repulsion theory is to be stated.
Concept Introduction:
The VSEPR model is based on an important assumption according to which, “In a molecule, the surrounding atoms and electrons should be arranged in way that the central atom should feel minimum repulsion from all of them”. The shape in VSEPR model gives specific angles for the corresponding shape.
VSEPR-theory is an important model that is frequently used in chemistry to decide the shape and geometry of the molecules. In terms of electron density it is given that both the bonding electrons as well as lone pair of electrons holds the shape of the molecule.
The above given assumption leads to the following results which help to predict the shape of a molecule. These results are given as,
