Hogeland was born in Virginia but resides and writes in Brooklyn New York. He has published on several physical prints and online periodicals such as The New York Times. He has written three books over American history, one of them being The Whiskey Rebellion. The focus of this novel is not actually the events that occurred but the people that lead to these events occurring. There is a higher concentration of the people that affected history and influenced the outcomes than the actual event. George
During this period of time from 1783 to 1800 there was a lot of financial instability among the colonies because of the debt that had been garnered from the Revolutionary War. There were also riots, i.e., the Whiskey and Shays Rebellions, which resulted from Americans who were upset about government taxation. The government was also undergoing huge amounts of change such as the change from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution as well as the development of separate political parties.
The novel I chose to read for my summer book critique was called The Whiskey Rebels by an American author, David Liss. The Whiskey Rebels is an American fiction novel inspired by events in the early history of the United States. The setting of where the book took place was after the Revolutionary War and in the late 1700s. The book’s main characters are its two narrators, Joan Maycott and Ethan Saunders who live two separate lives but cross paths in time over the scandal of William Duer. Ethan Saunders
The Whiskey Rebellion set a different tone in American politics following the American Revolution. It at times appeared to be a recreation of the American Revolution, yet differed in significant ways. It demonstrated that citizens of the United States would not allow their new government to become a clone of Britain when imposing and enforcing taxes. It also saw a federal government that took into consideration the citizens’ feelings of distrust toward the government. This slight consideration was
New essay: The Whiskey rebellion was all about protesting the 1791 federal excise tax. The tax created a burden on the small distilleries mainly run by farmers. This tax was very unpopular and it only took 3 years before the tax led to violence. In 1794 violence broke out in Western Pennsylvania and it was up to the President to do something about it. The farmers not only sold the wisky but often used it as money to not only support their families but help to run their family farms. The trouble
Destiny Manston per.4 Dept, Taxes, and Daniel Shays Daniel Shays Rebellion took place during the time of America's post war depression that from 1784-1787. The rebellion fits into the theme of ‘culture and society’. The confederation had an enormous debt that had built up during the Revolutionary War. Congress showed its weakness that weighed heavily on debtors and having no power to tax. The confederation could only make requisition on the states but even then could only receive
George Washington's presidency in 1789. Washington's talent for electing cabinet members and governing lead to his second term of presidency. Washington laid the foundation of America through many actions, The Whiskey Rebellion and The Jay Treaty in 1794 are two examples. The Whiskey Rebellion shaped Washington’s protection for his country, while The Jay Treaty helped normalize trade with Britain, and resolve financial debts from the Revolution. Thomas Jefferson’s vision for America varied extensively
The Whiskey Rebellion occurred soon after an excise tax was placed on Whiskey. Many people living in Western Pennsylvania and Maryland produced Whiskey from their homes, which they then sold or used as a form of currency. A fairly large group of men protested in an extremely violent way. The men attacked a tax collector, formed mobs, attacked arsenals, and “raised liberty poles” (Document A). Rumors about rebels negotiating with England and Spain frightened the federal government, as stated in Document
that would stop the national debt from growing or even reduce it. This bill, which was approved by both houses in the winter session of Congress in 1791, put an excise tax on all spiritus fermenti, or whiskey (Pike 1). The tax was an ad valorem tax that added twenty five percent to the value of whiskey. Needless to say, this was not well accepted and the peoples’ opposition to it would become one of the first tests of power the new government would have to face. The thing about this tax is that the
believe this is “a fit subject for a mad house.” (Washington 2017) Rebellions often lead to people being hurt or killed. I have prevented stopped rebellions and have been through rebellions myself. The Bundy Standoff in Oregon is a rebellion in which a man went against the government with his intentions being to get the people to revolt against the government. People should not have a right
