JOURNAL 2 There are multiple ways in which a client might end up receiving human services. Some might receive a referral, either by self or another individual such as a doctor (Woodside, 2018). Others might be involuntarily placed within the system by others such as schools, prisons, courts, marriage counselors, protective services, and the juvenile justice system (Woodside, 2018). Lastly, a client may receive human services by inadvertent services, the client is a part of a larger targeted population (Woodside, 2018).  There is no such thing as people who are unable to receive or benefit from human services, but there are certain people and groups that may be more likely to receive and/or need human services. Some populations that are more likely to receive services include, but are not limited to children who have been abused, low-income families, those in foster care, those battling addiction of any form, veterans, the homeless, immigrants, gangs, and members of the LGBT+ community (Goodwin University Goodwin University is a nonprofit institution of higher education and is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), 2020). Out of personal experience, I also recognize that those suffering from mental illness are also more likely to receive human services than the average population. It appears as if any group that is marginalized becomes more likely to receive human services.  A professional must work to have a relationship with his/her client in order to provide the most efficient and effective care for the client. It can be difficult for many people to open up to someone they do not feel a connection with. A possible way to start this relationship is for a professional to be empathetic, respectful, kind, honest, and a good listener. By presenting these characteristics a client is more likely to feel as if the professional is someone he/she can trust. Another possibility is the professional can self- 2
