Starbucks Case 2
Group 4
1.
Explain why Starbucks would not allocate certain corporate expenses to their retail operating (geographic) locations.
o
Starbucks would not allocate certain expenses to their retail operating locations because some expenses incurred by each store shouldn’t reflect on other stores' income statements. For example, rent & utilities
are different at each location, so if the total rent & utilities were allocated to each location, then the income statements wouldn’t reflect
as accurately how each store is actually performing compared to its expenses.
One example of a corporate expense that Starbucks does allocate to retail operations is IT services, explain why your group believe IT services would be
allocated to retail stores.
o
In the grand scheme of things, one store probably won’t need that much more technical support than any others to make it worth not allocating the cost between all locations. It
saves time and makes decision making easier to just allocate the cost among all store locations because the discrepancy between the stores shouldn’t be large enough not to.
2.
Identify an example of when cost estimation would be important at Starbucks, using the 2023 10K. o
An example of when cost estimation would be important is estimating the amount of coffee that a new location would use before opening. Estimating costs is a big part of preparation before opening a new location because a company needs to have a general idea of how much money might be required to start up the new location, and coffee
is a great example for Starbucks in this regard. It is useful to estimate the cost because predicting expenses can help to set prices on products. This can also help to project the new location’s profitability before opening. o
Example found: total unroasted & roasted coffee expense: October 1, 2023 $1028
