Ashleigh Gilbreath CJ-305 Technology in Criminal Justice Southern New Hampshire University March 9, 2024 1-2 Practice Activity: Technological Tools and Police Goals Classification of law enforcement technology For my law enforcement classification, I chose investigations. The investigations branch has many technological tools at its disposal. These include crime scene investigation tools, forensic analysis, digital forensics tools, surveillance technology, and investigative databases. These technical innovations in investigations technology empower law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations, gather intelligence, and build cases against defendants. Identify a specific tool. A specific tool that the investigations department uses is forensic DNA analysis kits. These kits are used to collect, analyze, and preserve DNA from crime scenes. The kit usually contains swabs, collection tubes, evidence bags, and protective gloves (National Institute of Justice, n.d.).
Identify police goal Forensic DNA analysis kits support the goal of “Reduce criminal victimization”. This means that the goal is to intervene after the first reported offense to prevent repeat victimization, rather than waiting for a second or third (Bridgeman & Hobbs, 1997). By identifying defendants through DNA, agencies can charge them and prevent them from committing further crimes. DNA can also lead to the exoneration of individuals, leading to a further reduction in victimization.
