2 What are the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods? How would you analyze the problem? Justify your selection of an individual method found within the qualitative and quantitative research that you would use to obtain data to address the issue. Provide a reasonable solution based on the analysis. The best way to determine a solution is to first find the problem and then fully understand the actual problem. Finding out why the community has an increased number of complaints that are concerning law enforcement can lead to a bunch of different things that need to be researched and addressed to find the underlying issue. Throughout the decision-making process many factors need to be addressed concerning whether a solution(s) is attainable within reasonable changes among departmental policies (Bachman and Schutt, 2017) The process of the investigation would be looking at the nature of the complaints, bringing up criminal records and what officers were involved, and seeing where the problems began which will all go in the decision making process. Many people see many concerning problems with criminal justice system as it is and they aren’t going to be able to make huge changes overnight. They are going to be able to address attainable solutions to help attempt to fix the problems that will in return fix the community complaints some. There could be common factors in the complaints and that’s something that will get worked on through research and investigation. Many problems could be things such as lack of police interactions or only working in certain social groups, or targeting specific members of the community and letting others get away with much more and neglecting certain parts of the community by not doing their job correctly. With research and investigation into a specific communities complaints may determine a common factor being the causation such as police interactions or lack of, a specific social group or area being targeted, specific members of law enforcement may be neglecting
3 duties or creating problems within a community, all of these factors could be easily addressed and possible to provide solutions with effective decision-making skills, investigative research and providing the necessary communication and education to incorporate the changes proposed in attempts to reduce community complaints (Bachman and Schutt, 2017). The problem needs to be qualitatively and quantitatively researched with the evidence to get the most effective and accurate solutions to the problem. With the use of observation and reliable sources that they gather from the evidence in the investigation dealing with the community complaints will be the qualitative research. Adding to this would be verbal complaints from people in the community and interviews with officers in the law enforcement agency officers to get their stories along with the ones they already have. Quantitative would be anything with paper work, such as criminal records, concerns in the community that have been previously reported, historical records and anything that was reported in the criminal justice system that are all numerical records that could that they could analyze and hopefully get some information out of. These are giving them effective ways to provide a solution to the problem in the community. The way they will provide a solution to the increased numbers to the community complaints concerning the criminal justice system will require getting the specific issues that are concerning the community addressed as well as looking at revising criminal justice policies as they do all the time with the continuing changes being made to the law. The law enforcement agency can use the changes but with the number of complaints being so high they might not be able to reduce them right away without the changes in the community and them willing to work with law enforcement and not against them. When it comes to making an effective change all parties must be willing to work on the effectiveness
