Homework #1 MAE 4310 Due 11:59 pm 1/21/24 Last name, first ____________________ 1. The homework problems in this course are designed to help you know where to focus and get help when preparing for exams. Since most of the exam problems will consist of modified versions of the homework assignments, it will be wise if you try to do the assignments by yourself, as if taking an exam, and make a list of terminology and concepts you don’t understand so you will know what questions to ask and which topics to focus on when preparing for exams. Believe it or not, group studies to get homework solutions will do more harm than good; learning what others in the group know does not tell you what you don’t know. Of course, a group collaboration on a homework assignment may help you get something to submit for the homework resulting in a higher homework grade; however, in regard to your overall course grade at the end of the semester, the homework average has minimal effect compared to the exam average. I have observed that a lot of students do not know how to prepare for exams and, consequently, end up being very disappointed in their ability to demonstrate that they do understand the material. That is, the answer to each question is to be typed, handwritten, or pasted in the space immediately following each question; this includes all MATLAB code used to generate the answers; answers without the work required to get the answers will not receive credit. To make this possible, the assignment will always be a Word document which can easily be modified. If MATLAB is used to get answers or plots, the results and code used must also be inserted immediately after the question. Also, if an assignment is due at 11:59, then an assignment uploaded to Canvas after 11:58:59 will be shown to be ‘late’ and not graded. Sign your name below if you understand the required format and that submissions submitted in the incorrect format and/or ‘late’ will not be graded. (10%) Signature_______________________
3. (20%) You are to work problem E1.3 on page 39 in the book. This first problem has been worked for you demonstrating a correct professional format. I used ‘insert’ ‘shapes’ to create the block diagram shown below. You may prefer to manually draw it on a piece of paper and then scan it and paste it in the space following the problem statement. Or, if you have a pad or laptop with a computer pen, you can write directly on the document. If you don’t type words and/or equations, be sure to print with symbols large enough for someone to easily read. Solution to E1.3 As shown below, the desired laser output power level from some source is compared to the actual power level producing the power level error in volts which is the input to a microprocessor which outputs a current which is the input to the laser adjusting the power level output of the laser. microprocessor desired power level controller laser input + _ power level current output of laser (volts) error (volts) (amps) sensor that measures the actual power level of the laser and outputs a calibrated voltage Note, see the ‘adder-subtractor’ on page 5 of the ‘Special Topics in Controls’ book for way to implement the circuit for comparing the desired and actual power levels. For simulation and analysis of this system, the microprocessor, laser, and sensor will be modeled with transfer functions provided by the manufacturers; since any changes in the desired power level will most likely be very slow changes (low frequency), these transfer functions will probably be simple gains (amplifiers). 4. (20%) E1.4 5. (20%) E1.6 6. (20%) E1.13
