Teacher Interview 4: Environment and Students Megan-Paige Ruiz MAE4360 Professor Robert Regalado November 7, 2023 Ask a classroom teacher if you may interview them about how they use knowledge of students, family, and community to make decisions for their mathematics teaching. A classroom environment nurturing all learners reflects the best practices in teaching mathematics and the needs of the specific learners. As the NCTM Equity Principle states, we much have “high expectations and strong support for all students.” Here you will design five questions to ask a classroom teacher, so that you will learn about how they develop an environment with high expectations that supports all learners. This might include, but is not limited to, cultural and/or linguistic background, involving families’ learning styles, learning differences, personalities, skills/backgrounds, local community interests/events, interests of individual students, and seasonal considerations. Interview Questions Teacher Response 1. Why is being knowledgeable about the cultural and/or linguistic background of your students important? This is important because many of my students are currently learning the English language. If I teach an entire lesson in English at least half of my class will not understand what is being taught. With that being said, I teach in English and in Spanish, so all my students have the opportunity to learn and comprehend the content material. 2. What strategies do you use to teach a class of diverse learners? I use visuals such as videos, images, and audios. I try my best to use manipulatives, like snap cubes, Play-Doh, or spinners when possible. Most importantly, I incorporate visuals, audios, and hands- on activities in my lessons to cater to the diverse learners in my classes. 3. How do you use the interests of individual students to teach content? I use the interests of individual students to teach content by providing examples and word problems the students can relate to; this engages the students and encourages them to participate. 4. How do you use local community interests or events to teach content? I use local community interests or events to teach content the same way I use the interests of individual students. I use concerts, music festivals, and movies to motivate and encourage student engagement and participation. I use those events to provide word problems examples my students can relate to. 5. What strategies do you use to engage and involve families in your mathematics classroom? I communicate with parents via email, phone, or Schoology. I also send home progress reports so parents can see where their child is at, and they must sign the progress report and send it back. Most importantly, I send them the schedule for the tutoring sessions and at-home strategies they can use to help their child with math homework. Others: When is it appropriate to use the interests of individual students in a mathematics lesson? It is always appropriate. It is a terrific way to get students engaged in the material. I have been Adapted from Bay-Williams (2013)
teaching for the past 12 years, and I have learned that students learn best when they can relate to the topic or questions. I try my best to teach using my students' interests in mind. Summary After completing your interview, describe how you believe the teacher keeps expectations high and supports all learners. How does the teacher use the backgrounds and interests of their students? Offer suggestions of your own that you would try to incorporate if you were the teacher of this mathematics classroom. Mrs. Paredes is an exceptional teacher, and I have learned a lot from her during the time I have been completing my clinical hours with her. She keeps expectations high and supports all learners by teaching in two different languages. She explains everything on a step-by-step basis and does not move onto the next step unless the students understand. She walks around and helps students individually when they are completing their independent work. What I would try to incorporate in this mathematics class would be more hands-on activities. For example, pair the students up and have them produce their own word problems or questions with a solution to see if they comprehend the material. The students do a lot of work from their textbook and although that works, I think it would be beneficial if hands-on activities were incorporated because it would be a fun and unique way of learning. The students could learn and comprehend better if it were from a peer especially when it is hard for a student to do so. Apart from that Mrs. Paredes has taught me a lot and her way of teaching is comforting, enlightening, and motivating. Adapted from Bay-Williams (2013)
