Lab 4 Christian Hankins 10/3/2023 OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY MAE 225 Solid Mechanics Lab II
Introduction: In this lab we will investigate the relationships between the torque and angle of twist in different materials. Having an understanding of these properties is important for designing and analyzing components like shafts, gears, and other mechanical structures, where torque-induced rotational deformation is a critical consideration. The objective of this lab is to measure and analyze the relationship between the applied torque and the corresponding angle of twist. We utilize a torsional testing setup to systematically apply a steady varying torque level to the specimen and measure the angle of twist relative to the torque until the specimen ultimately fails. These tests will help us understand the fundamental differences in materials and some of the reasons in which we should use on material over the other.
