Renewable Energy Laboratory Report Grading Sheet MAE 650:435 Spring Name:______ Experiment:__Renewable Energy_ Section/Group:________ Abstract o Statement of Objectives (3 pts.) o Important Apparatus and Methods (2 pts.) o Statement of Significant Results (2 pts.) o Cogent Discussion of Results (3 pts.) Subtotal _______/10 Introduction o Introduction of renewable energy (5 pts.) o Comparison of renewable energy with non-renewable energy (5 pts.) o Introduction of solar energy and wind energy, their background and pros and cons (5 pts.) o Description of solar energy and wind energy relating formulae (5 pts.) Subtotal _______/20 Results & Calculation o Loading (See 86516-20_Solar_Module_JS-S_ED1_PR1.pdf, Job Sheet 4 Loading) (12 pts.) o Tabulate collected data following Table 4-1 and 4-2 (4 pts.) o List and answer questions 1-6 (8 pts.) o Battery (See 86516-20_Solar_Module_JS-S_ED1_PR1.pdf, Job Sheet 5 Battery) (12 pts.) o Tabulate collected data following Table 5-2 (2 pts.) o List and answer questions 1-8. (10 pts.) Battery type: 12VDC, 110Ah deep-cycle sealed lead-acid AGM storage battery Refer to Table 5-1 for questions. o Efficiency (See 86518-20_Solar Wind Systems_JS-S_ED1_PR1.pdf, Job Sheet 4 Efficiency) (14 pts.) o Tabulate collected data for both the solar and wind modules. For wind modules, you can follow Table 4-1. (4 pts.) o Calculation of total power output from solar module and wind turbine (2 pts.) o Calculation of efficiency of transferring solar energy to electrical energy by solar module and fill out the table. (1 pts.) o Calculation of efficiencies of transferring wind energy to electrical energy by wind turbine and fill out the table. (3 pts.) o List and answer questions 1, 2. (4 pts.) o Rutgers Campus Power Usage (16 pts.) o In 2013, Rutgers installed the largest renewable energy system (Livingston parking lot) ever built on a college campus in the US. The 32-acre parking lot produces 8.8MW(peak) of clean energy. Yingli 260 Watt Solar Panel is used in this project. Here are the specs for this solar panel: Watts(STC): 260W Watts(PTC): 188.8W Dimensions: 1.65m * 1m * 0.05m Select one output and estimate the number of solar panels as well as overall area(m 2 ) the panel occupied in this project. Hint: 8.8MW is the ideal estimation under standard test condition. (4 pts.) o Calculate the estimated ideal annual electricity generation (in kWh) of the whole system. The efficiency of Yingli solar panel is 17.5%. (4 pts.) Hint: Calculate the annual solar irradiance over the area of canopies as input power. Find irradiance data here: https://www.nrel.gov/gis/solar-resource-maps.html . Which data better suits the reality? GHI or DNI?
o Check electrical power usage of Busch/Livingston Campus in uploaded pdf file. Considering the dust accumulated on panel surface, uneven solar irradiance, cable loss, etc., the efficiency is around 70% of the ideal electricity generation. How many percent of the electrical demand will it satisfy for Busch/Livingston Campus electric consumption? (4 pts.) o Answer the following questions: (4 pts.) 1. What is the difference between STC and PTC? Why these two test conditions make a big difference? 2. What is the difference between GHI (Global Horizontal Irradiance) and DNI (Direct Normal Irradiance)? In the efficiency calculation, which one matches the reality better, and why? Subtotal _______/54 Conclusions & References o Concise Listing of Significant Conclusions (8 pts.) o References (2 pts.) Subtotal _______/10 Overall Quality o Title, Participants, Header/Footer (3 pts.) o Spelling and grammar (3 pts.) Subtotal _______/6 TOTAL _______/100
