Hands On Lab 1: Anatomy and Physiology Basics (3 Activities)
Submission Instructions (This applies to all labs in 168):
Type your answers and copy all pictures directly into the Word document
Submit it via the blackboard submission link in Word format (docx).
This lab requires pictures, they must be embedded and will not be accepted as stand-alone files
If an assignment is submitted incorrectly, you will be contacted and the assignment will not be graded unless resubmitted properly. Late penalties may apply
Grading
: Divide number incorrect by total number of questions
Introduction:
Anatomy and Physiology is fascinating but there is a ton to learn! We start here with the basics and keep building on this foundational work throughout this course and into A&P 2. Everyone has their preferred way to study so each lab will have multiple ways to look at the material and will serve to give you an idea of new resources or study methods that you may want to use as you move forward. For this lab, work on getting that anatomy and physiology terminology down! It may seem like a new language now, but the more you practice with it, the easier the course becomes overall. Watch These!
Video resources to help guide you through the material: These will be in each lab and you may choose to watch them at the beginning or end of your lab to either serve as an intro to the material or a summary (or both!). Crash Course: Intro to Anatomy and Physiology

Activities:
Activities (including Virtual Labs) that you need to complete, will follow the introduction and links to videos. Let your instructor know if you have any questions regarding your lab assignments, they are there to help!
Activity 1: Levels of Organization and Organ Systems (2 parts. #1-18)
1-7: Put the levels of organization in order from smallest (1) to largest (7) and give an example of each level. Both columns must be correct for credit. For example: Organelle, peroxisome
#1-7

Part 2: Organ Systems (8-18)
Fill in the following table with the organ system described. Each of the 11 organ systems will be used once. The first one has been provided as an example and bonus.
Description
System 8. The main system that secretes hormones
Endocrine
9. Provides an outer covering of the body for protections
10. Involves contractions and creates most body heat
11. Exchange gases between air and blood
12. Converts food molecules into forms that are absorbable 13. Provides framework & support for soft tissues and produces cells in red marrow
14. stimulates to contract and interprets information from
the sensory organs 15. Transports nutrients, wastes, and gases throughout the body
16. Produces gametes (egg and sperm)
17.Transports excess fluid from tissues to blood and produces immune cells
18. Removes liquid & wastes from blood & transports them to the outside of the body
Activity 2: Directional Terms and Planes of Sectioning (2 Parts, #19-37)
In this activity, you will use a banana and play-doh to practice some basic directional terms and planes
.
Part 1: Play-Doh Dissection Questions to respond to are below the instructions
A.
You will need about a handful of play-doh for this activity (1 standard size can is more than enough).
B
. You’ll want to take your play-doh and make it into six shapes as seen in picture B. C. Assemble your play-doh shapes into a 3D stick figure as seen in picture C on a piece of paper. Use this stick figure for the following questions. His name is Bob. He does not have to look perfect.
Remember, you can always put Bob back together again if you need to! This is a great study tool for anatomical term practice.
19. Cut one or more of his legs into proximal and distal portions. Label this on the paper you have your play-doh on. Post a picture of him below.
20. Cut along the transverse plane (you may cut right through him). Post a picture of him below
