Peripheral neuropathy occurs when there is damage to the nerves on the outside of the
brain and spinal cord. When this condition is present, it causes weakness, pain, and numbness in
the hands and feet. It may also affect other parts of the body, which include your digestive
system. The job of the peripheral nervous system is to send information from the brain and spinal
cord to the rest of the body through motor nerves. Another function of the peripheral nervous
system is to send information to the central nervous system through the sensory nerves. Along
with the mini functions of the peripheral nerve pathway, there are also many injuries, problems,
and infections. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the most common causes of neural
pathways is diabetes(Mayo Clinic 3-4). Symptoms of peripheral nerve pathways usually can be
described as pain such as stabbing, burning or tingling symptoms may be treatable if they are
caused by a condition that can be treated. Medicines also can help reduce the pain of peripheral
neural pathways. There is a list of systems that are affected by peripheral neuropathy such as
sensory nerves, motor nerves, and autonomic nerves. Sensory nerves are the nerves that receive
sensation in the body, which include temperature, pain, vibration, or touch from the skin. Motor
nerves are in charge of the control of muscle movement. Atomic nerves are in charge of control
functions, such as blood pressure, sweating, heart rate digestion, and bladder function. People
who have the symptoms discussed above should seek medical care right away, the earlier that the
symptoms are treated, the better treatment you’ll be able to receive, and the better chance of
preventing more damage. Some causes of peripheral neuropathy include autoimmune diseases

which are related to cancers in the body’s immune system. Diabetes and metabolic syndrome,
which is known to be the main cause of peripheral neuropathy. Infections, heritage disorders,
tumors and bone marrow disorders are also causes of peripheral neuropathy. Ways to prevent
peripheral neuropathy include eating healthy, such as many fruits, vegetables, whole greens, and
proteins that the body needs to thrive. Eating healthy protects the body and keeps up with the
vitamins that your body needs such as B12. Foods that are a good factor include meat, fish, eggs,
and low-fat dairy foods. Constant physical activity is also very important as it keeps your body
active and internal vitals up. We discussed beneficial factors, but we need to discuss factors that
need to be avoided. These factors include exposure to toxic chemicals, smoking, and drinking
alcohol. When being examined for peripheral neuropathy, there are many things that a doctor
will look at such as your full medical history, neurological exam, and test. The test went to the
blood test which detects the amount of vitamins your body has, and imaging tests, such as a CT
or MRI, which looks for herniated discs. The nerve function test which measures electrical
activity in your muscles helps find nerve damage. Nerve and skin biopsy examines the sensory of
a nerve and the number of nerve endings. These tests are very crucial as they are the main
diagnostics for peripheral neuropathy. Treatments for peripheral neuropathy include medicines
such as pain relievers and antidepressants. Another main treatment used is therapy such as
scrambler therapy spinal cord stimulation plasma exchange, and physical therapy. Surgery is also
a treatment for peripheral neuropathy as it can remove tumors. The most important factor when
dealing with these conditions is self-awareness. It is crucial that you are aware of the state of
