Exercise 2 (p. 28)
Please insert your responses to these items here.
a.) Nasal Consonants, air flow and sound transports through the nasal cavity. Oral Consonants, air flow and
sound travels through the oral cavity.
b.) Articulators can be described as the body parts that are involved in the vocal tract can be used to produce
speech sounds.
c.) The respiratory system is important to the vocal production because it forces air through the vocal tract
which generates sound.
d.) The jaw is essential to lip and tongue movement. Whenever the jaw moves, the lips and tongue will move as
well.
e.) During vocal fold vibration, the vocal folds are closed which increases built up air pressure. Then, the vocal
folds are forced open by the built up air pressure. When the vocal folds are open to the maximum,
the folds
then begin to close. After the vocal folds are closed, the cycle of vocal fold vibration begins again.
