Endocrine System Assignment
An important part of the endocrine system is the thyroid gland. The thyroid produces thyroxine, known as T3, and triiodothyronine, known as T4. These hormones aid in managing bodily functions such as a person's basal metabolic rate, fertility, mood, and brain development in infants (Shahid et al., 2023). Dietary iodine is essential to maintain the thyroid's function. People typically consume iodine via iodized table salt (Betts et al., 2023). The feedback system includes the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland. The hypothalamus produces TRH,
the thyroid-releasing hormone which stimulates the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland will then produce TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone. In response, the thyroid produces T3 and T4. When these hormones are high, TSH decreases, and when they're low, TSH increases. The feedback system helps the body maintain levels of thyroid producing hormones in the body. Ashley's results show low levels of TSH and high levels of T3 and T4, insinuating hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is typically caused by Graves' disease, an immune system disorder. Common symptoms of Graves' disease include bulging eyes, anxiety, tremors, goiter, and sleep disturbance (Mayo Clinic, 2022). Furthermore, Ashley has protruding eyes, weight loss, and anxiety. All of these complaints are signs of Graves' disease. Medications such as propylthiouracil or methimazole, prohibit the thyroids' capability to produce hormones. Beta blockers prohibit the effects of hormones and are another treatment option for Graves’ disease. The thyroid absorbs radioactive iodine, which damages its cells. Additionally, surgery to remove the thyroid is another treatment option (Shahid et al., 2023).
