Samantha Spence THEO104 Discussion Thread: Moralistic Therapeutic Deism Moralistic therapeutic deism is a great depiction of today’s overall society. The vast majority of us that were raised Christian, and even some who were not, is the utilization of the “golden rule”. This rule states that we as a person and society should treat all others exactly how we would like to be treated, or to have our loved ones treated. As a Christian, this role was implanted into my head and that of many other children at a very young age. Today, the number of children and teens that are within the walls of a church for Sunday service are drastically diminishing. This is quite a change from when I was a child and teen, as we did not have such diversified thought processes. Today’s youth is not regularly participating in church events or studying their Bible to the capacity that my generation did, but still consider themselves to be a member of the Christian faith. In 2021, the first national study of worldviews found that “three out of four people who embrace Moralistic Therapeutic Deism consider themselves to be Christian’s” (Staff, 2021). It is crucial that this generation is taught that simply stating that they are Christian’s does not in fact make them so, and that their actions play a pivotal role in them actually being considered a faithful and practicing Christian. Those with this mindset are certainly teachable when placed in environments that can show them the true meaning of the world and the love of God. References: Staff, C. (April 27, 2021).
