2 INDICATORS OF ACCULTURATION SCORING AND REFLECTION Reflection Introduction The general sociodemographic of Anthony Anderson is he is a 52-year-old, male, African American. He has lived in the United States his entire life, but has lived in seven states which include Connecticut, Louisiana, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina, and Florida. He has been a collegiate basketball coach for the last 28 years. Anthony has three adult sons who all are coaching basketball at the college level. He has been married to his wife for 31 years and she is a schoolteacher at a local elementary school in Florida. I have known the volunteer for three years. I was his previous supervisor at a local university in south Florida. I met with Anthony over a video conference call where we discussed each piece of the acculturation interview. His ethnicity is an African American man who associates directly with the language of English. What is to come in this reflection paper is the discussion of language, cultural behavior, cultural knowledge and in the end how I feel the interview went with Anthony. I will also discuss ways I feel the instrument needs to be adapted and the limitations I perceived during the interview. Language The self-perceived language competence by context or situation for Anthony is English. My interpretation of the total score, range, and mean was what I expected it to be as Anthony has only lived in the United States but has had experiences traveling to other countries while working with international student athletes. He can speak Spanish but is not fluent and tends to recruit student athletes who have some English-speaking backgrounds. For the language portion of this interview there were no outlier scores that need to be addressed as English is the

The implications for clinical or consulting work with this client would be the client is continuing to do in-depth research to understand my client’s multi-faceted, complex context is an important aspect to focus on when working with my clients, as recognition of his impact on his present environment (Drankus, 2010). Anthony doesn’t have much time to speak anything other than English with his current job, family situation and lifestyle, so there would be no implications that need to be documented regarding his language. Cultural Behavior Anthony’s lack of availability in participation to certain activities include watching television programs and movies is limited due to his career and family lifestyle. Yes, Anthony has a demanding job focusing on his student-athletes for ten months out of the year, which limits his time to watch television programs and movies. His participation in this portion of the cultural behavior is solely focused on watching sports center and he does not watch movies. Anthony also could not remember the last time he read a magazine or newspaper as everything has gone to being electronic. The one piece he discussed a lot about during his interview is music. He listens to music daily, whether it be in the car, at practice or while traveling on the road. My interpretation of Anthony’s scores is that he doesn’t value mindless information, meaning he doesn’t just sit and watch television programs or movies like most of the United States. He focuses on his family and job making sure everything comes together so the student- athletes can be the best versions of themselves while they are out on the real world. The outlier scores were his limited knowledge of what newspapers and magazines were still being distributed or printed. Although, he doesn’t watch movies I was very surprised by the lack of knowledge he had on how to get any newspaper in south Florida. The main music he listens to is rap, Christian music, and soul. This was a very high variety of music he feels connected to which
