Ethnographic Interview Essay The first question I asked him was he responded with “Yes, back in the mid 60s I seen how the Haoles started to change where I went grow up.” I responded by asking him to go more in depth. The deeper meaning is to show love, compassion, and invites others to a sense of a warm welcoming. Secondly, I had asked my grandfather if he had seen the language disappear or slowly vanish. One of the people being interviewed had said that language was like your breath, you are nothing without it. So, to build on that, He had seen the Hawaiian language go farther and farther away making one of the most important aspects of culture disappear. The importance of the language disappearing would mean that the traditional practice of the culture was slowly becoming less and less as well. The difference in culture had surprised me in multiple ways which started from how people acted, to how they treated me, to how they reacted to me when I tried to greet someone like I would back home. The reason for this is what I think is structural because of how different we were raised and the principles our parents were raised on which would trickle down to the principles our parents raised us with. My grandpa wanted to make sure that I knew people in the mainland were going to be different than I am before I moved up here to Oregon. The whole interview was surrounded by his thoughts of when he noticed and how he reacted to how he saw the “ Spirit” and language almost disappear.
