W07 Applying Anthropology: Balanced Reciprocity 1. How do you participate in balanced reciprocity with neighbors and friends? I think this question is very interesting because I had never thought about of this reciprocity with my neighbors some of the ways in which I participate with a balanced reciprocity with my neighbors or friends is that we always try to share mutually the products that we produce or acquire also some services that we have, that allow us to share each other(Exchange: How commodities and services, once produced, are distributed among members of the society Textbook pg.185) For example my wife and I have apple and peach trees in our yard and my next door neighbor likes to plant pumpkins, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes, and since we arrived in the neighborhood they share what their garden produces with us, and we also share apples and peaches with them, also after sharing that, I like to prepare salsa that I share with them and they also prepare peaches in syrup, which are very delicious.( Production: How material resources are converted into usable commodities. Textbook pg.185) 2. Are these reciprocal exchanges necessary to your survival? No, but they make our relationship stronger is very interesting how this works, because in our relationship as neighbors we have assumed that every year we will try to share what we produce is not written but we assume it because that makes our friendship relationship stronger(balanced reciprocity:The practice of giving a gift with the expectation that a similar gift will be given in the opposite direction after a limited period of time textbook pg.196) 3. List four specific goods or four services that you have used in the past month that were provided by redistribution. I have used the freeways. I have been a volunteer in a food bank. I have attended a public school. I went to a public library. 4. Explain the distribution or redistribution process for each of the four goods. Most of its services are provided through the taxes we pay in the state where we live or the country, for example, the use of freeways In the state of Utah the freeways are free so the money to use these roads comes from the payment of taxes, maintenance and construction of these as well. In the case of the public school and the public library, they are services that are provided by the government and all the payment of teachers, staff and employees comes from taxes that are paid locally, for example in the city where we live. A different case is the food bank in which I volunteer, the companies that donate food like smiths, harmons or macys receive a tax exception from the government if they donate food to our food bank, so they are redistributing their goods in exchange for reducing their taxes.
(The principle of reciprocity operates, for example, when friends and relatives exchange gifts on birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions. We can see the principle of redistribution at work when people hand over a certain portion of their personal income to the government for taxes, which are then redistrib- uted to public school systems, road maintenance, and other social services. Textbook pg.195)
