Doing Busines in the Global South What is the Global South? Terminology : - “First World” vs “Third World” - Origins: First world: Capitalist/developed etc, Second World: communist, Third World: everyone else - “Developed” vs “Developing” - Developed: superior connotation (these countries have reached the max potential of a developed country) - “Global South” vs “Global North” - Most used labels used at the moment - Emerging Markets vs…? (what’s the other half?) - Assumptions in the words that we use and they’re not always correct/accurate to the countries they describe Why is the GS interesting? - The misbelief that GS doesn’t have opportunities available for business HOWEVER there are lots of opportunities that are overshadowed unfortunately by misconceptions - Many economies with high growth rates (in the GS) meaning there are business opportunities when those countries become - Infrastructure is improving and is complementary good to man innovations - Complementary good : two goods that go together (gas and cars) - Infrastructure comes with selling things you weren’t able to sell without it - Public transportation - Roads - Airports, ports, harbors - Internet and communications - Less product development needed in many types of goods (because similar products already exist in North) Ignorance: - Asian financial crisis reached parts of London such as: - Thailand - Malaysia - Indonesia - Philippines - Singapore - South Korea - And for some reason, investors pulled out of Brazil because of its similar “developing country” status - - Why do we not know as much as there is to know?
- There isn’t any incentive to write about GS countries - And if there would be we wouldn’t even be interested and wouldn’t click on it Preconceived ideas - What kind of assumptions do we have about consumption having in the GS? - The example of “they have no money to buy things” - Where do we get out information? - Googling culture of a certain country is misleading because you don’t really get a sense of what that country is really like, especially its economy/business environment Understanding Local Contexts - For analyzing the demand for specific products, need to consider multiple elements of a consumption environment: - Needs and wants for a product or product family - Available substitutes and complements, incl infrastructure - Network effects - Social media - Dependant on someone else using them - Watching shows that friends and people are talking about - Attitudes to risk: iPhones in Mexico and Brazil - They didn’t sell as much in Mexico or Brazil - Because of street crimes - Consumer’s costs and benefits of consuming the product How can we find out about a country and its market opportunities? - Ethnographic sources such as books and blogs, also Dollar Street - What do people actually talk about? Social Media (Instagram, twitter, facebook) - Fiction Books - Market research reports - Fata from values/attitudes surveys How do businesses decide on what products to sell in different markets? - Availability of substitute and/or complementary products in the local market - Current level and speed of economic and social development - Cost of production + transport and local income level - is it possible to make a profit? - Availability and feasibility of local production facilities and staff
