Step #1 - Read Explorations Chapter 6 Step #2 - Watch San Diego Zoo Primate Behavior Video Behavior or Concept Time/Part of the Video Notes Digging/ searching? Beginning at 5:28 2 baboons looked like they were searching for something in the dirt. Dug for about 1 minute then walked away. sex? Starting at 7:30 It looks like 2 baboons were off and then started having intercourse, & within the minute about 10 more baboons showed up. Snacking together Around 10:00 The same group of monkeys all started to snack around the tree together. They eat, relax, and vibe together for about 5 more minutes. Hanging around water hole Starting at 15:30 There are quite a few baboons at the water hole hanging around. One baby baboon is shown playing around while the mom and dad seem to be close by attentively. Dad leaves? Around 20:00 For the remainder until around 25:30, the “dad” supposedly was off with another baboon, and they appeared to be possibly socially grooming the whole time. Quick intercourse Around 26:10 It looks like a girl baboon backed into the guy baboon, so they have intercourse, and then they show their teeth at each other and go separate ways. The rest of the video they just wonder and chill out amongst each other. Step #3 - Response to Questions . 1. One concept I think correlates from the reading is the discussion about parental investment. This is demonstrated throughout the video where we see different examples of parent priorities according to gender. The females tend to look like they prioritize eating and staying healthy while looking after their baby, and the males tend to look like they’re focused on masculinity and their surroundings/ other baboons. One other concept I think correlates with the reading
is the discussion about group living and feeding competition. I think throughout the video you might see one baboon who obviously wants more food than the other but one thing that can be inferred is since they’re in a zoo the competition isn’t as intense as it is in the wild. However, we can see that the baboons continue to live amongst each other in groups regardless. 2. These observations from the video suggest the concepts we know initially from the readings are correct. As far as what we can learn about the primate group and the individuals in them, they are very similar to humans in different ways. These similarities include competitions amongst each other, for resources like food and for mating as well. It’s also interesting to see the dominance that occurs in primates with males and females and how we see gender roles in everyday life. 3. After viewing the whole video on primates, it made me realize how I never really acknowledged the similarities in monkeys and primates whenever I see them, like in the zoos. I think primates can be considered human, because at the end of the day, it’s like we’re all going through the same thing just through completely different perspectives. There is also competition in humans between food, sex, parental roles, and this instance in a zoo, which is completely different from the wild, even shows that. What’s different about primates is that I don't think they have nearly as many things humans do, compared to each other. I think this is essentially a good thing, because maybe then some primates wouldn’t be subjected to being overlooked or threatened to violence. I think in this video at the San Diego Zoo we might not be given enough examples to see if primates also experience being treated differently amongst each other. But if there are cases where one primate is considered non- primate, like there’s humans considered “nonhuman’’, then it’s also in the same context that humans also experience different treatment.
