Cultural Relativism Cultural Relativism Cultural Relativism is the concept that beliefs customs and practices derive from one's viewpoint of its culture. It is important to understand and learn about a cultures beliefs and practices, from an insider or an emic perspective, and to be careful not to take an ethnocentric perspective. It is natural to believe that one's culture is superior to another, so the careful investigation of cultures is necessary. In this paper, I will discuss childrearing in America. From an etic perspective, I will discuss how becoming a parent is an important rite of passage as is the celebration of life. Americans raise children to be more independent compared to other cultures. I will take an insider’s perspective to discuss how in Japan children are raised interdependently, and the elderly are highly respected. Death is a significant part of Japanese culture and considered an important rite of passage. In this section, I will examine childrearing in America from an etic perspective. Etic refers to an outsider’s account or perspective approach to studying culture. According to Marvin Harris (1968, p. 575) “Etic statements are verified when independent observers using similar operations agree that a given event has occurred,” and etic models are valid in so far as they accurately predict the behavior of the native participants of a culture, Crapo (2013). In this article entitled Attributions and Attitudes of Mothers and Fathers in the United States, (Lansford, 2011) discuss how principles of liberty, freedom, and equality have had an impact on U.S. culture and childrearing. This article, from an etic perspective, suggests that although there are different subgroups of Americans, these principles are the same throughout the subgroups regarding instilling values into their children. Furthermore, an emphasis is placed on individualism and independence.
