Paleontology is a specialized field of geology and biology—it involves the study of the evolution and ecosystems of ancient life on Earth, from several thousand to two billion years ago (AGI, 2020). Dinosaur paleontology involves the discovery, excavation and preservation of dinosaur fossils. Dinosaurs are an extinct group of reptiles that lived throughout the Mesozoic era, from approximately 200 to 66 million years ago (AMNH, 2020). Dinosaur paleontologists excavate dinosaur specimens in various localities around the world. Localities are outcrops of sediment that contain an abundance of fossil material in distinct formations. A formation is part of an outcrop with one or more types of sediment that represents a discrete unit of geologic time, usually representing a period, epoch, or extinction event (boundary between periods of time; Wilkerson, 2001). Most dinosaur fossil bearing formations are in areas where the sediments are uplifted, eroded and exposed, typically in a desert or tundra region (Geiling, 2014). Most dinosaur fossils people are familiar with, including Tyrannosaurus rex , Triceratops horridus and Edmontosaurus annectens , are located in the western United States and in parts of Canada, and come from the Cretaceous period of time (NHM, 2020; PBDB, 2020). In fact, most dinosaurs that are discovered throughout the world— including Australia and Antarctica—come from the Cretaceous period (PBDB, 2020). Literature Cited 1
