Module 11: A Man Called Bee Video Assignment 1. The Yanomamo are a group of people that have expanded from an area near Brazil and Venezuela called the Sierra Prima. At the time of Chagnon’s research, approximately 15,000 people lived among the Yanomamo in 150 different villages that can be found by the tropical forest. In terms of agriculture, the Yanomamo use a slash and burn technique, referred to as pioneer cultivation, and stay by a garden plot for a few years until a new one is made. The men in the village are taught to be aggressive at a young age so that they will grow to be brave and self-assured warriors for the tribe. These tribes are constantly under the threat of attack from other tribes that may try to take women and other valuables from the village. Fights may also break out within the village in which people fight each other with clubs, or in extreme cases, bows and arrows. Following one of these fights, certain groups may be forced to leave the village and seek shelter with neighboring alliances. Alliances can made between villages by trading goods such as weapons, dogs, and other useful items. These alliances can be useful to gain more people for help when raiding other villages. Children do not participate in raids, however, they practice both their shooting and dodging skills when playing in the clearing at the center of the village. Overall, the people of the Yanomamo tribe seemed to accept Chagnon into their village. They were excited to teach him their customs and tell him about the myths from their tribe. The people were hopeful that they could transform Chagnon into a “human being” according to their way of life. One of the head men even complimented him by calling him “almost human.” 2. Overall, I think it would be very hard for me to adapt to living with such a remote group such as the Yanomamo. It was hard for me to fathom how they can walk around the in the forest without any clothes or protection for their skin. Besides the cleanliness of the environment, however, I would not mind being a part of a society that is self-sufficient when it comes to food. I respect how every member of the tribe, whether through hunting or gardening, must contribute to attaining food for the village. It would definitely be a challenge to adapt to the living conditions and the language of the group. However, it would be interesting to get away from our westernized culture here in the United States and be integrated into the customs of a different culture. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed our discussions on other cultures in this class and think it would be an amazing experience to have first-hand interactions with remote groups of people. If I was an anthropologist, I would get involved with the group I am studying so that I could get a better understanding of their people and their history. I think the best way to learn more about a particular culture would be to integrate myself in it and learn as many of their customs and ways of life that I can.
