Module 9 Discussion Follow the instructions below to complete your assignment. 1. Review the Discussion Rubric [PDF] and Discussion Guidelines [DOCX] . 2. Select “Reply” below to create a post. 3. Review the subsistence systems we discussed in Module 8: foraging, horticulture, pastoralism, agriculture, and industrial agriculture. In a post of at least 250 words: i. Choose one subsistence type and explain what type of political organization that this cultural group would most likely have and why. ii. Explain what type of exchange would be most likely for that subsistence type and why. iii. Use the HRAF or course materials to give real examples. iv. Use course terms and concepts to support your answer 4. Select “Submit.” 5. Read your classmates responses. Respond to at least two of your classmates' posts. In a sentence or two Pastoralism is a subsistence system based on the herding of animals, typically nomadic or semi- nomadic. Groups relying on pastoralism often have a political organization characterized by a tribal or chiefdom structure. The reason for this is that in pastoral societies, land ownership is not as central as it is in agricultural societies. The mobility required to follow herds and find fresh grazing lands doesn't align well with centralized states. Instead, leadership is often based on kinship, and leaders, like chiefs, are responsible for maintaining the well-being of the community and its herds. The type of exchange most likely in a pastoralist society would be reciprocity. Pastoralists often rely on reciprocal relationships with neighboring groups for resources, such as trading animals, food, or other goods. This reciprocal exchange helps maintain a balance within the pastoral community and ensures their survival, as they often have to rely on the assistance of others in times of need. These concepts align with what we've learned in the course, such as the relationship between subsistence strategies and social organization (tribal and chiefdom structures in pastoralism) and the significance of reciprocity in maintaining social bonds and survival. By understanding how subsistence strategies, political organization, and exchange systems are interrelated, we can gain insights into the diverse ways cultures adapt to their environments.
