Our textbook Asking Questions about Human Origins, Diversity, and Culture states that race is “A system that organizes people into hierarchical groups based on specific physical traits that are thought to reflect fundamental and innate differences rooted in genetic and biological differences” (Welsch, Vivanco, & Fuentes, 2020). Anthropology biologically has two classifications of race. The first classification is the scientific concept. In this concept, race refers to the populations or groups within those populations with species with measurable biological characteristics. The other idea is culturally constructed. This is where cultural dynamics and ideologies link us to morphological traits. It makes it difficult to separate us into racial categories since we all are genetically 99.9% similar. It all comes down to what continent we hail from, and there are ways to test our DNA to determine where our ancestors come from. Sometimes that information can be false, but none of those tests matter because society will always divide us. Wealth, social status, racism, and education will forever determine our position in the world. Resources: Welsch, R. L., Vivanco, L. A., & Fuentes, A. (2019). Anthropology (2nd ed.).
