How do Roy's "amazing feedback loops" demonstrate scaffolding or the zone of proximal development? Think of a time you learned a new schema. How did scaffolding support your learning, and how did you know that you were becoming more competent? How does the concept of scaffolding as it relates to the zone of proximal development apply to any of the following programmatic themes? You may want to review the Programmatic Themes PDF document. Hello, In the video, Roy broke down his experience with how his son came to understand language. Roy’s “amazing feedback loops” demonstrates scaffolding by showing some of the data in regard to Roy and his family and their guidance of the child’s language. More specifically, the example given by Roy that supports this process is the “water” audio clips of his child progressing to the word. Through scaffolding and the social interactions, the child has, he was able to learn the word water and its association. When I was in high school, I took French for three years which sadly, I’ve forgotten most of it. However, at first it was overwhelming because of not being able to understand anything in the text or verbally. Gradually, with the support of my teacher I was able to understand the basics by the end of the year. I knew I was becoming more competent because I could take the basics and decipher other words in the language. Also, by the next two years I was able to read and learn from the text which made studying easier. The concept of scaffolding as it relates to the zone of proximal development applies to many themes. The one theme that it applies best to me is Ethics. The code of ethics is similar to a set of rules of the world in that they help guide us. Ethics is instructed almost everywhere schools, business, etc. Having these instructors (parents, boss, peers) demonstrate ethics helps an individual develop their own code of ethics for themselves. Hey Telisa, Great choice of example with Roy’s capture of his son’s first time taking multiple steps. In my post I chose to talk about the audio clip of his son’s progression with the word water. I think your example demonstrates proximal development well. I had a similar experience with teachers in school. Since we are there for majority of the day, teachers have a large impact on our progression. I think scaffolding fits into most of the programmatic themes but didn’t think too much about career connections until you mentioned it. Nice work!
Hey Breeana, Your first answer is well put. Roy’s feedback loops demonstrate his families influence on his son’s progression. It was amazing to see the data and how he and his team gathered to put together the audio clip of the word “water.” Great example of how scaffolding supported your learning and how these concepts apply to emotional intelligence. I wrote about my teach in school, but this is a good reminder of how much my parents have taught and encouraged me like yours.
