In this module, we delved into the fascinating and complex topic of the future of Deaf culture. While there were varied responses among my classmates, I found it enlightening to see the diverse perspectives and insights shared regarding the potential scenarios discussed in the Holcomb textbook.
One classmate's response focused on the scenarios presented in the textbook. They highlighted the potential for a thriving Deaf community, where Deaf culture remains strong and sign language is widely accepted. Their optimism for the preservation and growth of Deaf culture was evident. They also drew a compelling parallel with Plains Indian Sign Language, emphasizing its adaptability and the lessons it offers for the future of Deaf culture. Another classmate took a slightly different stance, believing that the scenario of the "Vanishing Deaf Community" is more likely to occur due to advanced medical technology. While they expressed a desire for a thriving Deaf community, they acknowledged the profit-
driven nature of our society, which might prioritize efforts to "fix" or "cure" deafness. The reference to Plains Sign Language in Module 5 was intriguing, as it hinted at the normalization of sign language within a society, offering a potential path towards inclusivity.
These responses collectively reflect the complexity of the Deaf culture's future. The scenarios presented in the textbook point to both hopeful and challenging possibilities. The discussions around technological advancements, cultural preservation, and inclusion bring to
the forefront the dynamics at play in shaping the future of Deaf culture.
As we navigate these discussions, it's evident that technology and societal attitudes will play pivotal roles. The embrace of diversity, cultural preservation, and a more inclusive society is an ideal many of us hope for. However, the profit-driven nature of advancements in medical technology poses a challenge.
From this module, it is clear that the resilience and adaptability of sign languages, as demonstrated by Plains Indian Sign Language, offer valuable insights and hope for a future where Deaf culture thrives within an inclusive society.
