The central question posed in the video is “Why don’t you people just get over it?” In other words, why are Indigenous people still fighting for justice? Why don’t they just "move on"? Which three factors mentioned in the video struck you as most important when answering this question? How could these same factors be damaging to the health of Indigenous Peoples? Indigenous people are still fighting for justice because they are still facing the adverse effects of systematic racism and colonization. The three factors that I believe are important when answering this question are the long-term effects of residential schools, assimilation (loss of identity), and segregation of the indigenous people. As outlined in the text, the mental and emotional trauma caused by residential schools can affect the way an individual copes in certain environments. This coupled with the existing social determinants of health could be viewed as a contributing factor to the elevated rates of suicide, substance misuse, and mental health concerns in the Indigenous community. Numerous Indigenous individuals were forced onto reserves, resulting in limited nutritional food resources, and reducing their abilities to live off the land. As a result, we’ve seen an increase in the incidence and prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in the Indigenous communities.
