Anthropomorphism Chart Before watching the 2006 movie Charlotte’s Web , describe human qualities that are often given to the following non-human creatures. Crow— What characteristics do people and society attribute to this animal? EXAMPLE: People and society tend to think that crows are harmful to crops; that they carry disease, are pesky, annoying, unclean, vermin, parasitic, and that they are un-necessary and need to be destroyed. Spider— What characteristics do people and society attribute to this creature? Spiders are often perceived as creepy and crawly due to their multiple legs and sinister appearance, while also being associated with stealth and cunning due to their ability to spin webs, creating ambush or traps. Pig— What characteristics do people and society attribute to this animal? Pigs are often seen as intelligent and clever, with scientific research supporting their cognitive abilities. However, they are also associated with greed and gluttony, rooted in historical and religious symbolism, perpetuated in literature, art, and folklore, contributing to their stereotype. Sheep— What characteristics do people and society attribute to this animal? Sheep are gentle, docile creatures known for their calm nature. They follow the flock, often a metaphor for human behavior. They are naive and gullible, easily led by instincts and surroundings. Rat— What characteristics do people and society attribute to this animal? Rats are highly intelligent, known for their problem-solving skills and adaptability. They are also known for their cunning and resourcefulness, scavenging for food and evading predators. However, they are often associated with filth and disease. Horse— What characteristics do people and society attribute to this animal? Horses speed, agility, and endurance are associated with athleticism. Behavioral traits, such as loyalty, intelligence, and sensitivity, make horses perceived as faithful companions. Anthropology plays a role in assigning human-like qualities to horses, including emotions or intentions based on their behavior or expressions.
Next, write down ideas that describe how these animals relate to one another: Crows are often associated with intelligence and cunning, while spiders are linked to creativity and patience. Pigs are often associated with gluttony and laziness, while sheep are docile and conforming. Rats are often seen as cunning and deceptive, while horses are noble and loyal. Crows are seen as messengers, spiders as creation myths, and pigs as indulgence. Horses are often seen as symbols of power and freedom. In anthropomorphic representations, these animals represent wisdom, creativity, and the power of the human spirit. While watching/after watching the 2006 movie titled Charlotte’s Web: ……take notes for how anthropomorphism is used in characters to "address a specific social problem of that time (early 1950s) and to draw a universal lesson that may be applicable in other situations and epochs" (Zipes ). Identify the social problem and the universal lesson that are being characterized through White's story. In the 2006 movie adaptation of E.B. White's classic novel "Charlotte's Web," anthropomorphism is used to address the social problem of mortality in the early 1950s. The story revolves around Wilbur, a pig, and Charlotte, a spider, who form an unlikely friendship. The anthropomorphism of these characters demonstrates the power of empathy, compassion, and selflessness, and the importance of standing by friends in times of need. This universal lesson transcends the specific social problem depicted in the 1950s and remains relevant across different situations and epochs.
