How and Why Does Art Education Impact Learning and Instruction in a K-12 Classroom? Art education is a great way for students to express themselves while learning. Research shows that education also positively impacts student’s academics. Art can be used as a tool to help teach students. However, besides helping students, art education also helps teachers and school systems move forward. What does research and educational theorists show about art education? Research and educational theorists show how impactful art education can be for children’s academic performance. Debra Sickler-Voigt (2020) explains how artistic development in childhood is the process in which visual art skills are learned and built from early childhood through adolescence. The art theories help guide educators as they design and create curriculum and lessons for their students. A challenge students face is that they must learn every elemental skill before they can start creating more detailed artwork. Simple tasks for adults, like holding a pencil and drawing a straight line, are not so simple for small children who have never held a drawing tool before. To remedy this challenge, teachers break down skills into age-appropriate learning tasks that help them grasp the skills. For instance, a student would be taught to hold a pencil and mark a paper, then the student could be prompted to draw a shape, soon tasks become more challenging or rigorous as students age or develop skills. Viktor Lowenfeld studied artistic development and named six stages, scribbling from age 2 to 4, pre-schematic from age 4 to 6, schematic from age 7 to 9, dawning realism from age 9 to 11, pseudo naturalistic from age 11 to 13, and the period of decision from age 14 to 18 (Sickler-Voigt, 2020). lead to the theory of Constructivism, students can actively learn and understand their environments. Howard Gardner created the theory of Multiple Intelligence, the way to identify a child’s learning abilities and intelligences. Art education helps students perform better because it helps with their academic performance, confidence, and expressing emotions.
Art helps children grown and develop through their childhood. How can teachers incorporate art into classroom instruction in a k-12 classroom? Art education is a flexible type of education that can easily be incorporated into classroom instruction in a k-12 classroom. Debra Sickler-Voigt (2020) explains, “Discipline-
Based Art Education is a method for teaching art that extended beyond studio art production to provide students with deeper levels of artistic understandings.” Discipline-Based Art Education includes art aesthetics, criticism, and art history. Art history is important for students to learn so they understand the background of art and why it is still around to this day. Students should know why they are encouraged to create art and connect it to the information they are learning. They will come to understand the different types of artists, cultures, religions, social history, and famous art pieces that we favor today. Teachers can incorporate art history at the start of the school year and throughout the school year as new media and techniques are introduced to them. Criticism is a key part of art history that they will need to understand. According to Sickler-Voigt (2020), “Art criticism refers to oral and written discussions about art for the purpose of making informed judgments about art, design, and visual culture using set criteria.” There are 5 different types of art criticisms including, persuasive, portrayal, analytical, socially driven, and feminist. These different types of art criticisms allow students to think, evaluate, observe, and understand art. We tend to overlook details in art causing us to miss the meaning behind the art pieces. The
