FROM ISSUE TO PERSUASION 2 1-7 From Issue to Persuasion The first issue relating to Anthropology that I could explore in my final essay would be the issue of cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation. Cultural appropriation, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture” ( Cultural appropriation 2023). Simply put, the difference between appropriation and appreciation is that someone who is appreciating a culturally significant practice is doing so in a respectful manner whereas someone who is appropriating a culturally significant practice is doing so in a manner that is disrespectful, discriminatory, or demeaning to the original culture. On the one hand, this is problematic when someone from the more dominant culture is praised for doing something, say wearing a hairstyle traditional to a minority culture, that someone from the culture it originated from would be penalized or discriminated against for in the same setting. On the other hand, someone could argue that a white person wearing a traditionally African American hairstyle is simply showing their appreciation for the culture that it came from when done respectfully. Another potential issue to explore would be the debate around historic preservation. This debate centers around the argument between developers seeking to build profitable and affordable apartments where historic buildings are crumbling in cities where space is at a premium with a high cost of living and preservationists who argue that the historical value of these buildings is worth protecting as they give the public the ability to appreciate the craftsmanship and history that these buildings contain in a way they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. This issue highlights the issue of profit versus historical value. For my persuasive essay, I want to focus on the issue of cultural appropriation.
