Realist in education believe in logic, critical thinking, and scientific method. Many educators that focus on Realism believe that knowledge comes from the physical world and students need to interact with the world to learn. Knowledge in the mind of Realists comes from observation and experiences. Realists’ educators believe that “education should provide the experience, training, and practice that will cultivate our potentiality to be accurate observers, discovers of reality.” (Gutek, 2014, p. 63). Teachers are expected to be knowledgeable about their subjects and prepared in teaching students through different methods. The curriculum under
Realists is organized as skills, activities, and subjects that are related to the student’s readiness. From the point of view of an educator that’s philosophy is based on Realism, I would encourage the non-abstinence-based curriculum. The “spectator theory of knowing” in Realism promotes education based on experience, training, and practice that helps students to be accurate observers and discovers of reality. The notion of a non-abstinence-based program supports Realism through allowing students to experience sex education in a way that promotes discovering their own reality. Through promoting this curriculum, students will gain tools that will “help them in subsequent studies and subject-matter discipline” (Gutek, 2014, p. 67). While these students are in 7

grade, adopting this curriculum sets students up for the ability to protect themselves in the future as well as now. This curriculum is the most efficient and effective way for students to be introduced to preventing sexually transmitted diseases, as students are naturally curious. Implementing this curriculum to teach students about sexually transmitted diseases allows for students to see a glimpse of reality through systematically organized subject-matter disciplines, as the Realist curriculum calls for.
