After you have described the object, answer the following questions : a. In 500 years, what do you think would be the impact of this cultural work? I highly doubt that 500 years from now, that televisions are even used still, and technology will be so much more advanced by then and will have a different way of viewing things such as TV shows. However, I do think that there will still be evidence of this TV show series, in some form or fashion, that people will be able to discover, and appreciate, what the show was about. The cast of the show will clearly be long gone, but the realistic life lessons that the characters contributed to will live on forever. The TV series gives its viewers a raw, uncut, realistic depiction of tough issues that many families are faced with in modern society. I definitely think that other creators will be inspired by the show. The show could inspire creators that aren't afraid to cover societal issues that most people are too afraid to talk about. We don't do anybody any favors, by sweeping real-life issues that many people are experiencing, under the rug. People need to be exposed to things like the effects of addiction, domestic abuse, teen pregnancy, amongst many other tough issues. A lot of people/parents believe that sheltering their children from these types of issues is the best way to protect them from ever experiencing them. However, in my opinion, I disagree with this theory. I believe that people should be exposed to these issues and educated about the potential risks as well as preventative measures to avoid dealing with them. The show also covers important topics like mental health, trauma, sexuality, and poverty. These things are all issues that so many people are really dealing with personally and could benefit and be comforted by the inclusion of them on TV shows. The humanities also provide us with the tools to help us understand how to ensure that we treat people with kindness, understanding, and empathy, in order to prevent people from feeling excluded because of their
individual circumstances. Psychologist, Tania Lambrozo states, "That kind of understanding has less to do with prediction than with empathy." (NPR, 2016). A cultural shift of the normalcy of the inclusion of these issues on TV could potentially occur. The show is a realistic representation of what happens when everybody, including the system, fails you, and all that you have is the loyalty for your family, no matter how messed up they may be. b. What is the impact today? The television show series, "Shameless", is very well known nationwide, and was a popular favorite series of millions of people for the entirety of its production. This is actually pretty impressive, considering the show aired for an entire decade! I think the show had an impact on the portrayal society has regarding lower-class, underprivileged Americans, as well as the judgement and stereotypes that are placed on people that are dealing with really tough issues in real-life. I think that it inspired change of senseless judgement being placed on people that haven't necessarily been dealt the best cards in life and essentially have done what they could to survive. One of the main characters, Fiona, is the oldest of all of the siblings, and their primary caretaker. She was forced to drop out of high school so that she could take care of all of her brothers and sisters, with no assistance from literally anybody. She may not have been perfect in her method of care that she provided for the kids but considering that she herself had a troubled upbringing and no positive role models, she did her best! She was the perfect realistic depiction of a modern-day superwoman, that so selflessly provides for everybody in her life that is in need, without any resources from anybody else. She always made a way to buy food for her family, clothing, pay bills, and even come through when her siblings needed extra money for field trips at school. Additionally, the series is a great representation of character gentrification, showing the glow-up and positive transformation that these kids made, against all odds. This aspect of the show was especially
