Monisha Holloway Discussion 5
HUM BHVR 1.
I was unable to find an evidence-based intervention in my community that addressed the
risk factors of infancy and childhood development but I did find one that was still in the state of New Jersey which is The Burke Foundation ( burkefoundation.org).
2.
The Burke's Foundation is committed to funding resources for ACEs research and they provide support for parents, caregivers and guardians by facilitating programs and informal workshops in regards to this matter. They also reduce tension for parents by providing them with access to basic needs to limit the future levels of ACEs. This foundation trains educational, medical and behavioral health staff to be aware of the signs of ACEs and how to address them accordingly. The Burke’s Foundation promotes community awareness and encourages all NJ employers to become trauma informed. The research listed on their website that supports this intervention reads that, “According
to the most recent data available, over 40% of children in New Jersey—more than 782,000—are estimated to have experienced at least one ACE, and 18% are estimated to have experienced multiple ACEs” (Adverse Childhood Experiences: Opportunities to Prevent, Protect Against, and Heal from the Effects of ACEs in New Jersey, 2019). This indicates how much these kinds of interventions are needed across the state of New Jersey. The limitations to this intervention would be the fact that everyone will not receive access to these resources based on economic status or because of a false belief
in the effects of ACEs.
3.
Everyone in my community or surrounding communities do not have access to these resources because they are not available. This foundation does meet the needs of every
culture in their founding community and the state of NJ would greatly benefit if this foundation would extend their support to further cities and towns. 4.
The other resources needed in my community to address the risk factors of infancy and childhood development are free parenting classes for new mothers, free mental and physical health therapy for mothers and children, workshops within the community that offer informative methods to prevent ACEs and workshops on how to heal from trauma as an adult experiencing ACEs.
