Baptizing a Polygamist? Are You Kidding?
Eager missionary couple with the passion to serve God in educating the Indian Villages, exclusion of meeting and Polygamy; therefore, could you understand the shock of the couple! They were the most invigorated by this mission as they felt that God had called them to fulfill this mission and educate this secluded village. This young couple were prepared for this assignment and excited to share the word of God with the villagers. In this paper we will discuss the issues, arguments from both parties and the solutions.
Polygamy is “when a man is married to more than one wife at the same time, sociologists
call this polygyny and when a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, it is called polyandry
1
.” As Christian Missionaries, they are taught that polygamy is the same as adultery which is a sin. The Bible says in Proverb 6:32 that “
But a man who commits
adultery
has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself,” can you imagine the missionaries shock when they meet the people in the Indian Villages? The dilemma between the Missionaries and the Indian Village Committee is that the case study was trying to convert and baptist to a polygamist and for the man to keep both of his wives. Having more than one wife is
a sin and the Bible says “
And he shall not acquire many wives for 1

himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold” – Deuteronomy 17:17.
The missionaries were empathetic to the Indians but applauded them for their desire to be
baptized into the Christian faith. The dilemma between the two groups could not settle and agree
on a comprise; therefore, it is against what God has taught his children, that an adulterer shall not
be baptized into the church. The missionaries learned about the Indians culture and tried to make
the best decision for the Indian Village with still honoring God. Unfortunately, I believe this will
be an ongoing situation with no resolution forecasted.
