In the world of art, it is often speculated whether painting as an art form has died or is still surviving. While other art forms have gained prominence, painting continues to evolve and thrive. The art form is taking a new shape, and artists are continuously striving to push the boundaries of their work. Painters continue to explore new techniques and concepts in their work. Gerhard Richter shows that he is continuing to evolve in painting. You can see this in one of his “Abstract Painting” paintings. Each painting in this series is different. They have a different composition of colors, brushstrokes, and other abstract forms. The paintings showcase energy and movement but are very abstract at the same time. Richter’s “Abstract Painting” series shows continued experimentation regarding painting and the continuation of pushing the boundaries created by traditional painting techniques.
While some critics have suggested that technology poses a threat to traditional art forms, such as painting, this is not the case. “Ever since the birth of photography threw the discipline into crisis, or freed it from its mimetic obligations, artists have declared ‘the end of painting’, seen as a conservative and obsolete medium in the face of technological change.” (Turner, 2021). As with any new technological advancement, people speculate what will be replaced and become irrelevant instead of focusing on what it could make better and be integrated with. “Arthur Danto, in his reflections on ‘The End of Art,’ argues that photography led 20th- century artists to abandon any attempt to imitate nature and explore the question of art’s identity instead, leading to an era in which anything goes.” (Turner, 2021). Technology, when used as a tool, can provide additional avenues for artistic expression. David Hockney's "The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011" is a series of drawings done on an iPad. These drawings are vividly colored and showcase the beauty of changing seasons. Technology has provided a new platform for artists to express themselves and is not a substitute for traditional painting but a complementary resource.
